How to prevent ingrown hairs

They are a common problem and if you’re removing hair, you don’t want to be left with unsightly red bumps.  It’s smooth, clear skin for the win!

So what are they?

Ingrown hairs are caused when a hair that regrows is trapped under the skin.  This can cause inflammation, pain and red bumps

Why do they occur?

Ingrown hairs happen for a lot of reasons, in your initial treatment at Essential Maintenance we will go through all the factors that create an ingrown hair. Let’s go through them:

Lifestyle factors

Are you in lycra or gym gear all day? If you are when your removed hair grows back, there is little space for the hair to grow out into.  Without letting the skin have some space, it’s likely that tight clothing will contribute to causing an ingrown.

The same goes for underwear, tight elastic especially around the leg areas create friction and again affect the ability for the ingrown hair to push through the skin. Switch up your underwear to cotton mix and non VPL. Let that bikini line breathe!

Hydration

Do you drink enough throughout the day?  and were’ talking water here! Your skin is made up of 70% water and it needs replenishing throughout the day.  The worse months we see in salon for dehydrated skins are August and December.  Yeesh, those skins are thirsty! Up that fluid intake, right now.

Hygiene

When you remove hair by any method, whether extracted at root or shaving.  The skin is prone to infection.  That means hygiene is key.  Cleaning the skin thoroughly before and after can wash away bacteria, meaning when the skin heals there won’t be any trapped bacteria that can cause inflammation inside.

You SHOULDN’T be sleeping in your underwear, and you should be applying an antiseptic oil to the area.  We love Tamaras Soothing Oil for all over the body, we recommend this for after treatment and whilst your hairs are growing back in.  Takes 2 seconds after a shower and your skin will thank you for it.

Skincare

Lastly, what’s your skincare regimen?  We’re not talking about your face – but your WHOLE body.  If you want to remove your hair and don’t want unsightly bumps this is essential. Our clients are taught to exfoliate every 2-3 days and to moisturise as much as possible. Everywhere. That’s right even your undercarriage needs to be moisturised as much as your face!

We stock a whole range of exfoliators and moisturisers for each skin and hair type.  We’ll go through this with you during your appointment.  If you can’t get to us, feel free to DM us and we’ll be happy to help.
